Unless otherwise stated, original copies of Wills dated prior to 1858 are usually found in the appropriate Diocesan Record Office for the court where the Will was proved - for Gloucestershire, this is the Gloucestershire Archives. Wills which were proved at Bristol Episcopal Consistory Court may be found at the Bristol Record Office.

Copies of Wills for which Probate was granted at the PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) may be obtained via the National Archives Wills website. (verified 2021-09-13)

Abbreviations which may be used on this page are:-

(Ad) "Admon", or Letters of Administration.
(I) Inventory (a list of the deceased's goods, and their value)
(N) A Nuncupative Will is one declared by a legal representative, as being indicative
of the deceased's wishes, and will often refer to the Testator in the third person.
(#) Indicates the Will is a 'duplicate' - that is, more than one person has submitted an
abstract from the same original Will.
 * An asterisk against a surname indicates the Executor(s) of the Will, or, in the case
of Administration (Ad), the Administrator(s)
i/t/p "in the parish (of)".

If my wife shall die, I will and devise unto Margaret one yearlie annuity of £6,13s.,4d. out of my 3 tenements in Compton Greenfeild, and Henbury, and assured to Mathew CREWE of Alderly and Thomas PERREY of Wootton-under-Edge, clothiers for jointure during her life;   to my wife Hellen - one silver bowl partially gilt, half a dozen silver spoones that were Anthony WEBBEs, one salt with his cover (double gilt) and one other little trencher salt of silver with his cover (double gilt), one jug of stone covered with silver and double gilt, with the one half of all my household moveables and one half of my ploughstuff, also 20 kyne &c.
Executor: my cousin Nicholas VEELE and devise unto him all the rest &c.

Overseers: his brother Stephen VERNON;   his friend John RUDGE, yeoman;   his friend Price WILLIAMS, baker of Woodmancote i/t/p Dursley;   and his friend Charles SMITH of Elbridge Court in the parish of Churchdown, co. Gloucester, yeoman - {they} to continue the dairy and farm for one year after his decease for his children, and his son in particular - his son John suffers from infirmaties {sic} so he cannot care for himself;   his daughters Harriett and Sophia are both under 21yrs.
Also mentions: Elizabeth STAGG and Sarah STAGG, daughters of his late wife's brother John STAGG;   Jane STATTON, daughter of his late wife's sister Sarah STRATTON.
Proved 2 Jan 1795, sworn to less than £2000. GRO Ref: 1792/#1.
Notes: John died at The Park, North Nibley 30 Oct 1791 and was buried 3 Nov 1791 at St Martin's, North Nibley. He was the son of Hayward VERNON and Elizabeth nee COLLINS who later married Daniel TAYLOR, when Hayward died in 1758.
