Unless otherwise stated, original copies of Wills dated prior to 1858 are usually found in the appropriate Diocesan Record Office for the court where the Will was proved - for Herefordshire, this is the Hereford Record Office. Wills which were proved in the Archdeaconry of Brecon may be found at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

Abbreviations which may be used on this page are:-

(Ad) "Admon", or Letters of Administration.
(I) Inventory (a list of the deceased's goods, and their value)
(N) A Nuncupative Will is one declared by a legal representative, as being indicative
of the deceased's wishes, and will often refer to the Testator in the third person.
(#) Indicates the Will is a 'duplicate' - that is, more than one person has submitted an
abstract from the same original Will.
 * An asterisk against a surname indicates the Executor(s) of the Will, or, in the case
of Administration (Ad), the Administrator(s)

Codicil: 29 Oct 1614 - additional legacies to my Aunt BENET.
2nd Codicil: 22 Apr 1615. Testator says that he is indebted to his Aunt BENET for the cost of his journey to London in Apr 1615 (£117/10/-) and a note asking his wife to pay his daughter Anne (now Mrs William JEFFRIES of Holme Castell)'s marriage portion.
3rd Codicil: [spoken] 8 Aug 1615 when Testator requested Robert BENET Bishop of Hereford to re-grant the lease of the lands at Almeley in the name of Robert KEMPE in lieu of the Testator's. Spoken in the presence of John HOSKYNS, Doctor of Laws, Philip PRICE MA and others.
Proved PCC 16 Sep 1615 in London before John BENET by the oath of  Elizabeth KEMPE, the Relict.
Note: Testator was the Edward KEMP of Chanston who appears in the Visitation of Herefordshire, 1634.

Notes: [1] Residence left blank in the Will, but of Shenston (ie Chanstone i/t/p Vowchurch, co. Hereford), in the Probate Index.
[2] After the death of her husband Edward KEMPE of Whitborne [qv his Will 16 Sep 1615] the Testatrix's son Robert KEMPE became a Ward of Court under the auspices of the Court of Wards and Liveries and Elizabeth stood surety with William JEFFRIES to the arrangements.
[3] The KEMPE family is noticed in the Visitation of Herefordshire 1634; the maiden name of the Testatrix is unknown but she appears to have been married firstly to a SMYTHE and then to Edward KEMPE.
