Unless otherwise stated, original copies of Wills dated prior to 1858 are usually found in the appropriate Diocesan Record Office for the court where the Will was proved - for Herefordshire, this is the Hereford Record Office. Wills which were proved in the Archdeaconry of Brecon may be found at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. Copies of Wills for which Probate was granted at the PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) may be obtained via the National Archives Wills website.

Searches for, and Copies of Wills and Probate 1858-1996 may be obtained through via the Find a Will service, at local Registries, and sometimes on microfilm at County Record Offices. Further information on post-1858 Wills, may be found on the Government's Wills, Probate and Inheritance pages.

Abbreviations which may be used on this page are:-

(Ad) "Admon", or Letters of Administration.
(I) Inventory (a list of the deceased's goods, and their value)
(N) A Nuncupative Will is one declared by a legal representative, as being indicative
of the deceased's wishes, and will often refer to the Testator in the third person.
(#) Indicates the Will is a 'duplicate' - that is, more than one person has submitted an
abstract from the same original Will.
 * An asterisk against a surname indicates the Executor(s) of the Will, or, in the case
of Administration (Ad), the Administrator(s)
i/t/p "in the parish (of)".

Testator wishes to be buried at Llowes and gives 12d to the Vicar there for tithes unpaid or wilfully forgotten;   3s 4d to the poor box at Llowes and 4d to the Cathedral at St David's.
"About 8 years ago last upon good consideration, I did make a lease of all my messuage lands meadows etc, pastures, woods, underwoods and appurtenances situate, sett, lying and being in the parish of Llowes to Sir James WHITNEY,   Kt., for the term of 1000 years [sic] at 12d per year [or possibly 20d per year]… now I confirm this and give the said yearly rent to Jane base daughter of Margaret HYGGINS and her heirs else to my nephew Griffith ap RICHARD ap John, my brother's son and his heirs (and for lack of such heirs, to the right heirs of me, the said Griffith JOANES)";   my Exors to have custody of Jane until she reaches the age of 21.

Sole Executor: Sir James WHITNEY Kt - he to have Rest and Residue.

Notes: See the Will dated 11 Jun 1572 of Davyd ap JOHN of Brilley which names Jane, base daughter of Griffith JONES Esq. Davyd ap JOHN names: my brothers Richard, Watkyn and John (who is the father of Sibell and Johan). He also mentions two sisters - Ellen (mother of Margarett) and Isabell. Also mentioned are two cousins - Griffith ap RICHARD (who may be the one mentioned in Griffith JONES Will) and William PRICHARD [is he "William ap Richard"?]
[Where did I get this information? There is a Will in the Brecon Archdeaconry Court of a David ap JOHN of Llywel proved 1578 and another for a David ap JOHN of Betws [Clyro?] proved 1573. Are these the sources?]
