Unless otherwise stated, original copies of Wills dated prior to 1858 are usually found in the appropriate Diocesan Record Office for the court where the Will was proved - for Herefordshire, this is the Hereford Record Office. Wills which were proved in the Archdeaconry of Brecon may be found at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. Copies of Wills for which Probate was granted at the PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) may be obtained via the National Archives Wills website.

Searches for, and Copies of Wills and Probate 1858-1996 may be obtained through via the Find a Will service, at local Registries, and sometimes on microfilm at County Record Offices. Further information on post-1858 Wills, may be found on the Government's Wills, Probate and Inheritance pages.

Abbreviations which may be used on this page are:-

(Ad) "Admon", or Letters of Administration.
(I) Inventory (a list of the deceased's goods, and their value)
(N) A Nuncupative Will is one declared by a legal representative, as being indicative
of the deceased's wishes, and will often refer to the Testator in the third person.
(#) Indicates the Will is a 'duplicate' - that is, more than one person has submitted an
abstract from the same original Will.
 * An asterisk against a surname indicates the Executor(s) of the Will, or, in the case
of Administration (Ad), the Administrator(s)
i/t/p "in the parish (of)".

Notes: [1] This Extract is included in H F Waters' 'Genealogical Gleanings in England' Vol I pp462-463 which also states that Capt Thomas ALDERNE was bur 9 Apr 1657 and Mrs Dorothy ALDERNE on 7 Sep 1658 at St John's Hackney co. Mddx. Both are described as 'of Darleston' ie Dalston co. Mddx. A further note identifies Richard LEATHER as Richard LEADER who was associated with the Iron Works of Saugus in the USA.
[2]Alumni Oxoniensis notes that Edward ALDERNE LLD. was the son & heir of Thomas ALDERNE of Hereford Town, Gent; Edward died 1671 in Rochester, co. Kent. The testator's sister Eleanor was married to John GREENE of Cobwall, Allensmore, co. Hereford, Barrister-at-Law (who d. c1639 aged 42+); her son John GREENE of London, Merchant and of Cobwall d. 1665 aged 35. The a/m Alice GREENE was the widow of Thomas GREENE of Monnington Straddle (d. c1636), brother of John GREENE of Cobwall; she was a daughter of Kennard DELABERE of Tibberton.
[3] Boyd's 'Inhabitants of London' shows that Thomas ALDERNE was a Citizen & Draper of London who became free on 1 Oct 1645; he mar 11 Apr 1648 at St Helen's, Bishopsgate, London Dorothy ROWE (bap 17 Sep 1629 at St Mary le Bow daughter of Owen ROWE [c1592-1661], Citizen & Haberdasher by his first wife first Mary YEOMAN, d. 1628). The testator's son Thomas was b. c1649, became a Citizen & Draper of London, & bur 1717 Hereford Cathedral.
