Unless otherwise stated, original copies of Wills dated prior to 1858 are usually found in the appropriate Diocesan Record Office for the court where the Will was proved - for Gloucestershire, this is the Gloucestershire Archives. Wills which were proved at Bristol Episcopal Consistory Court may be found at the Bristol Record Office. Copies of Wills for which Probate was granted at the PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) may be obtained via the National Archives Wills website.

Searches for, and Copies of Wills and Probate 1858-1996 may be obtained through via the Find a Will service, at local Registries, and sometimes on microfilm at County Record Offices. Further information on post-1858 Wills, may be found on the Government's Wills, Probate and Inheritance pages.

STOKES, Robert - of Lawrens Weston i/t/p Westburie, husbandman, 26 Sep 1600. (being sick in bodie)

Executrix: my wife Johan, and to have all the rest.
Overseers: John COX and John R[illegible, this name scratched out];   Robart BRADLEY [interleaved]
Witnesses: Robt WASBOROW.
Also I request Mr Willm LARGE as concerneinge the suet of law wich my landlord haith commenced agaynst me that I doe refer onelie into his hand to end at his decretion.
Debts wch the testator oweth: [illegible, scratched out] BROWNE gent …   to the teything of Lawrens Weston for wood.
Debts owing to the testator: John TYLER alias SMYTH … Phillip TYLER alias SMYTH.
Witnesses: to this above Interlyned Thomas FISHPOOLL.   Robert STOKES X his mark.
Probate 13 Feb 1601 by Executrix [Johan STOKES]; Bristol Wills.
Notes: [1] I immediately thought the "Alice VIJSPILE" strange. Now "vijs" is Dutch for "fish" and then we see below that Thomas FISHPOOLL witnessed the interleaved lines. And William FISHPOOLE appears in Westbury per Smith's Men & Armour, 1608 (a great help for clues to those nearly indecipherable names).
[2] I re-read carefully the line about Wm STOKES and that John's wife should have use of him for his natural life. That's what the will says. Was the poor lad a life-long indentured servant/slave? an imbecile who needed to be cared for? [Ed: Or local dialect assigning a gender (him) to an inanimate object?]
